Art Prize - Making a Point II
I
am showing this piece at Art Prize 2011 in Grand Rapids, MI from Sept.
21 - Oct. 9. Art Prize is a "radically open competition" where over
1,600 artists are showing work throughout the entire city of Grand
Rapids for three weeks. There is $500,000 in cash awards given to the
top ten artists based on public vote. No jurors!
“Making a Point
II” is a larger version of the piece that I made in 2008. The original
piece is 12” x 12” x 2”, and made from approximately 124 pencils and
100 more points. I have quadrupled it in size and I am fascinated with
the many patterns that exist within the combinations of pencils. The
new piece is 24” x 24” x 3” and use over 900 pencils.
For many
years I have been exploring the idea of multiples. I develop patterns
from the accumulation of everyday objects. Within my pieces there is a
sense of the micro and macro. From a distance a shape, line, pattern,
or design is noticed. Upon closer inspection, a familiar object is
discovered.
